Our view

Stevenson’s tale of pirates and buried gold holds up well, above all thanks to a villain who stays in the memory long after the details of the plot have faded. Some readers find the prose of its century demanding in places, but worth the effort. Short, tense and rich in atmosphere, it suits young readers ready for a first classic and adults returning to it.
