Our view
Ben Lerner’s “Transcription” is a thoughtful, quietly moving novel built on a man’s last interview with his old mentor. The talk takes place shortly before the older man’s death, and the book follows its aftermath in three sections. Some readers get through it quickly but find Lerner stronger in narration than in dialogue, and wish the third section were not one long speech with barely a pause.
