Our view
A long novel about two friends who start a video game company, and one that absorbs even readers with no interest in games. Opinion divides over its people: Sadie and Sam can be petty and slow to grow up, which some find true to life and others simply grating; the tone, too, strikes some as uneven. Best for those willing to stay with flawed characters across 500 pages.
Worth knowing Gabrielle Zevin’s 2022 novel follows two friends, Sam and Sadie, who design video games together across three decades, from late-1980s Boston to Los Angeles. The title comes from Macbeth’s speech on the pointlessness of time, which the book turns into the idea of a game you can always restart. It was Amazon’s book of the year for 2022. No knowledge of games is needed.
