Our view
Slow, dense and extravagantly written, “Titus Groan” makes the castle of Gormenghast its central character. This Gothic novel of more than five hundred pages opens the “Gormenghast” series, and readers repeatedly mention how the weight of description sets their pace. Those who settle into it praise the language and the eccentric characters; some find it too dense and say it drags.
