Our view

“The Wonder” is an atmospheric historical novel about a nurse set to watch a girl who is said to live without food. Lib Wright, who nursed in the Crimea, arrives to observe eleven-year-old Anna O’Donnell, and the book turns on doubt and faith. Some readers cannot put it down and find both Lib and Anna fully drawn; others find the opening dull and Lib irritating.
