Our view
“The Winter of Our Discontent”, Steinbeck’s last novel, is a searching book about money, pride and what it takes to remain a good man. Set in Sag Harbor on the East Coast, it sets legality against morality through introspective prose and close character study. Some readers need a while to get into it; others find the narrator’s narrow outlook hard to live with. A novel for readers content to leave a moral question open.

About the book
The Winter of Our Discontent is John Steinbeck's last novel, published in 1961. The title comes from the first two lines of William Shakespeare's Richard III: "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun [or son] of York". It is Steinbeck's only work to take place entirely on the East Coast of the United States; it is primarily set in Sag Harbor, New York.
