This romance with LGBTQ+ characters is more thoughtful and moving than its glamorous setting suggests. An ageing star of Old Hollywood tells her life at last to a journalist nobody has heard of, and the book runs on two open questions: what lay behind the seven marriages, and why this interviewer. Some readers come away attached to the characters above all, reluctant to part with them. For those who enjoy a confession unfolding slowly.
Worth knowing Published in 2017, it found its biggest audience four years later through TikTok. Taylor Jenkins Reid frames it as an ageing film star’s interview with an unknown journalist, and why she chose that journalist is the question the book keeps open. Characters cross over into Daisy Jones & the Six, Malibu Rising and Carrie Soto Is Back, but each book stands alone. Netflix announced a film adaptation in 2022.
