Our view
George Eliot’s “The Mill on the Floss” is a rich, searching novel of family and growing up in a nineteenth-century provincial town. Some readers grow deeply attached to Maggie Tulliver and feel for her as family and neighbours hem her in, while finding her brother Tom hard to forgive, whatever sympathy Eliot asks for him. Readers who like a long Victorian novel built around character will find its more than five hundred pages well spent.
