Our view
A love story that readers warn each other about: it is built to make you cry, and it succeeds. What lifts it above a simple weepie is its honesty about the fact that not every life ends happily, delivered in lines readers want to underline. It moves quickly and does not drag. Those who avoid stories of loss, or distrust books that go straight for the tear ducts, should know what they are choosing.
Worth knowing John Green signed every copy of the first printing, some 150,000 of them, after preorders took off. He drew on months as a student chaplain at a children’s hospital and on his friendship with Esther Earl, a young fan who died of cancer in 2010 and to whom the book is dedicated, though Hazel is not based on her. The title twists a line from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. It was filmed in 2014, and in India as Dil Bechara (2020).
