Our view
Markus Heitz’s “The Dwarves” is a classic heroic fantasy that tells its war-and-quest story through an orphan dwarf raised by humans. Some readers enjoy its likeable characters and old-style clash of good and evil, while admitting it adds little new; others find it tries to cover too much and explains rather than dramatises. It opens a long series aimed at readers who still have an appetite for traditional epic fantasy.

About the book
The Dwarves is the first novel in the eponymous high fantasy series The Dwarves by German fantasy author Markus Heitz, published in 2003. The story follows an orphan dwarf by the name of Tungdil Bolofar, who is raised by humans. The book was originally written in English and German. The book was continued in the following years with the titles The War of the Dwarves and The Revenge of the Dwarves. The fourth volume The Fate of the Dwarves was released in February 2008. Seven years later, the fifth volume The Triumph of the Dwarves was released in February 2015. In September and November 2021, the series continued with the double volume The Return of the Dwarves book 1 and 2. The novel series The Legends of the Alfar, which deal with the bloodthirsty opponents of the dwarves, also takes place in the same world. A video game named The Dwarves, developed by King Art Games, is based on the first book; it was successfully funded through Kickstarter.
