Our view

“Street Magic” is a grounded second volume of Tamora Pierce’s “The Circle Opens”, following the young mage Briar Moss. He travels with his teacher Rosethorn, and some readers value how seriously the book treats him and the other characters who have lived in gangs, though they are bothered by a character whose weight is treated as part of his moral failings. Readers fond of Briar will be glad of a whole book with him.
