Our view
Ted Chiang’s “Stories of Your Life and Others” gathers eight pieces of science fiction and fantasy that handle large ideas with rare care. They are the first eight he wrote, and all but one had appeared on their own before, so the book gives a full picture of his beginnings. The mood is thoughtful and at times dark, suited to readers who want science fiction to leave a question rather than a spectacle.
