Our view

“Prodigal Son” is an inventive update of the Frankenstein legend, recast as a present-day murder mystery. Written with Kevin J. Anderson, it opens Dean Koontz’s five-book series. How well the characters are drawn, especially the created beings and their motives, pleasantly surprises some readers; the plot confuses others. Readers who enjoy horror shaped like a detective story are its best audience.
