Editor’s note Preludes & Nocturnes collects the first eight issues of The Sandman, published from 1989 and gathered in 1991: an English occultist trying to trap Death in 1916 catches her brother Dream instead and keeps him in a glass cell for seventy years, and when he gets out he has to recover his three tools, a pouch of sand, a helm and a ruby, from a junkie, from Hell and from a madman. It is the volume Neil Gaiman has said is the least like the rest, still half a horror comic, and the one he suggests new readers can skip to the second; against that, issue six, twenty-four hours in a diner, is one of the most frightening comics ever drawn, and issue eight introduces Death, the sister who looks like a goth girl and is kinder than anyone. Ten volumes follow.
