Our view

“On the Steel Breeze” is a dark, sweeping second volume of Alastair Reynolds’s “Poseidon’s Children”. Machines, aliens and family ties fill this future history. Some readers rate it above “Blue Remembered Earth”, the first book, even if a few stretches drag for them, and say it can be read on its own. Its mood is hopeful for all its darkness, and “Poseidon’s Wake” completes the trilogy.
