“Not in Love” is Ali Hazelwood’s formula with the dial turned towards the adult: heavier subjects and more frequent, more explicit love scenes. The familiar pieces remain, a scientist heroine, a man smitten at first sight, a funny friend, and readers of her earlier novels generally enjoy this one too. Those who come to her for lightness alone should know the tone is more serious.
