Our view

“The Return: Nightfall” gives “The Vampire Diaries” a fresh start, bringing Elena Gilbert back from beyond death with new powers. Her blood now draws every vampire to her, the two brothers who love her included. Some readers find the long opening stretch slow, yet enjoy the chapters from Damon’s side, which show far more of him than the earlier books did. It is mainly for fans already attached to the original series.
