Editor’s note Hesse published it in 1930: the friendship between Narziss, a scholarly monk who stays in the cloister of Mariabronn, and his pupil Goldmund, who leaves to wander medieval Germany as a lover and a sculptor. It sets thought against the senses, as Siddhartha and Steppenwolf do in their own ways, and was among Hesse’s most widely read books in his lifetime. Stefan Ruzowitzky filmed it in 2020.
