Our view

“Little Women” works best as a sequence of domestic episodes: almost every chapter is a small story about the four March sisters that closes on a lesson. That gives the novel its warmth, though some readers tire of the moralising and find the pace slow. Jo remains the character readers recognise themselves in, even when the era’s expectations of women narrow her path. A comforting read for those who accept its nineteenth-century sermons.

About the book

Little Women is a coming-of-age novel written by American novelist Louisa May Alcott, originally published in two volumes, in 1868 and 1869. The story follows the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—and details their passage from childhood to womanhood. Loosely based on the lives of the author and her three sisters, it is classified as an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical novel.
