Our view

Crichton turns a warning about genetic engineering into a fast, tense survival story that reads easily for all its 451 pages. The dinosaurs alone supply much of the fun. Some readers find a few exchanges between characters dated, Malcolm too fond of lecturing on chaos theory and the closing stretch adrift from the central plot. A safe pick for anyone after smart, accessible entertainment.

Worth knowing Universal bought the film rights for Steven Spielberg before the book was even published in 1990. The novel is darker and more technical than the 1993 film: John Hammond is a ruthless businessman, and Ian Malcolm’s chaos theory drives the argument. Crichton followed it with The Lost World (1995), the only sequel he ever wrote.
