Our view

“Ivanhoe” is the medieval adventure that set the pattern for historical fiction: knights, battles, valour, and Robin Hood among the cast. Its picture of an age of chivalry is the main reward, and Scott lets doubt in too, through Rebecca, who asks what such glory is worth. Some readers never feel drawn into the tale, and some remark that the title hero spends a long stretch of it injured and offstage.
