Our view
“Holidays on Ice” is a slim collection of Christmas essays and stories whose humour is far darker than the festive theme suggests. The Macy’s elf piece is the one some readers single out, and Sedaris is at his sharpest when observing his own states of mind. Some find the remaining pieces uneven and straining for shock, and feel the language and a few of the jokes show the book’s 1990s origins.
