Our view

“Hallowe’en Party” is an engaging Hercule Poirot mystery whose late twists can catch out even a reader who thinks the answer is in sight. Anyone drawn by the title may find that the holiday itself plays a smaller part than expected; this is a small-town investigation first. At about 250 pages it is a compact Christie, better picked for the puzzle than for seasonal atmosphere.
