Our view

“Freak the Mighty” is a short, affecting novel about an unlikely friendship between two outcast boys. Max, huge but no scholar, and Kevin, a brilliant boy in leg braces, join forces for imaginative adventures, and the story is told in Max’s own voice. Some readers find that voice odd at first, then are deeply moved by the ending. Readers from about eleven upward are its natural audience.
