Our view

This short, restless novel suits those who like their science fiction dark, tense and more concerned with unease than with action. A bounty hunter pursues six escaped androids through a ruined San Francisco, while a second thread follows a man who helps them. Readers who know the story from the screen sometimes find the book’s world more sketched than fully realised.

Worth knowing Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel is the source of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982), though the film drops much of it, including Mercerism, a shared religion of empathy, and the status of owning a real animal, which drives Rick Deckard. Dick saw early footage and approved, but died in March 1982, three months before the film opened. The novel is short and stranger than the film.
