Editor’s note Friedrich Dürrenmatt called this 1956 play a tragic comedy. The billionaire Claire Zachanassian returns to Güllen, the bankrupt small town of her youth, and offers it one billion on a single condition: the death of Alfred Ill, the shopkeeper who abandoned her decades earlier and denied fathering her child with bribed witnesses. The townspeople refuse in outrage, then start buying on credit. It premiered in Zurich in January 1956 and was filmed in 1964 with Ingrid Bergman.
