Editor’s note Erich Kästner’s 1949 children’s novel: two girls meet at a holiday camp, discover they are twins separated when their parents divorced, and swap places to bring the family back together. Kästner first wrote the story as a film treatment during the war, when the Nazis had banned him from publishing. Disney’s The Parent Trap (1961) and its 1998 remake are based on it.
