Our view
“Appointment with Death” is a Poirot novel whose strength is its family: a household held down for years by a cruel, domineering mother. Christie gives the first half to these people and only then brings in Poirot, who means to settle the case within twenty-four hours. Petra makes a vivid setting, the clues are laid out fairly and the characters have more layers than first appears; some readers place it just below her best.
