Our view
Christie at her darkest: ten people stranded on an island by a storm, each hiding a secret, their host nowhere to be seen. The plot runs like clockwork driven by suspicion, and the atmosphere is noticeably grimmer than in her other mysteries. At just over 200 pages it is tightly built, and it suits newcomers to crime fiction as much as seasoned readers who want to test their guessing.
Worth knowing Agatha Christie’s best-selling novel, often called the best-selling mystery ever, appeared in Britain in 1939 under an offensive title that was changed for the US edition in 1940 and later everywhere. Ten strangers are lured to an island off the Devon coast and die one by one, as a nursery rhyme foretells. Christie adapted it for the stage in 1943 with a different ending; the 2015 BBC series keeps the book’s.
