Our view
Nora’s secret debt is only the surface of “A Doll’s House”: underneath, Ibsen’s three short acts are about a marriage lived as a performance. To spare her husband’s pride she hides what she did for him, and slowly sees how much else she has been acting. The ending seems abrupt to some readers until, on reflection, they recognise how long it was prepared; to others the whole play is dull, with nothing happening.
