Zora Neale Hurston
Zora Neale Hurston — one title in the rankings.
Editor’s note American novelist and folklorist of the Harlem Renaissance who grew up in Eatonville, Florida, one of the first all-Black incorporated towns in the United States. Their Eyes Were Watching God follows Janie Crawford through three marriages as she searches for a love that lets her be herself, ending with a hurricane that floods the Everglades. Its dialogue is written in the voices of rural Black Florida. Hurston died poor and forgotten in 1960; Alice Walker’s essays in the 1970s brought her back to readers.
