William Peter Blatty
William Peter Blatty — one title in the rankings.
Editor’s note American novelist and screenwriter whose The Exorcist (1971), one of the best rated horror novels here, was inspired by a reported exorcism of a boy in 1949. In Georgetown, the twelve-year-old daughter of a film actress starts to change in terrifying ways, and after doctors fail, her mother turns to Father Damien Karras, a Jesuit psychiatrist losing his faith. As frightening as it is serious about belief, guilt and doubt. Blatty won an Oscar for adapting it into the 1973 film, and later wrote a sequel, Legion.
