Walter M. Miller
Walter M. Miller — one title in the rankings.
Editor’s note American writer whose only novel published in his lifetime became a classic. A Canticle for Leibowitz, from 1959, which won the Hugo Award, follows a community of monks in a desert abbey who preserve the scraps of scientific knowledge left after a nuclear war, across three eras and some eighteen hundred years, as civilisation rebuilds itself and heads towards the same mistake. Miller had flown on the bombing raid that destroyed the monastery of Monte Cassino in the Second World War. Wry, sad and profound.
