Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo — one title in the rankings.

Editor’s note The giant of French Romanticism: poet, playwright, novelist and, during nearly twenty years of exile, a fierce opponent of Napoleon III. Les Misérables, from 1862, follows the ex-convict Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the policeman Javert, through poverty, love and the barricades of 1832 in Paris; its famous digressions on Waterloo, convents and the sewers are part of the experience. One of the highest rated classics here. His other books still have too few ratings to rank.
