Tim O'Brien

Tim O'Brien — one title in the rankings.

Editor’s note American writer drafted into the Vietnam War in 1968, whose fiction keeps returning to it. The Things They Carried, one of the best rated books here, is a set of linked stories about a platoon, narrated by a character called Tim O’Brien who is and is not the author; it begins with an inventory of what the soldiers carry, from weapons to love letters, fear and shame. It asks what a true war story is, and admits that sometimes invented truth is truer. Going After Cacciato won the National Book Award.
