Sheridan Le Fanu

Sheridan Le Fanu — one title in the rankings.

Editor’s note Irish master of the Victorian ghost story and mystery. Carmilla, from 1872, his most read work, is a short novel in which Laura, a lonely young woman in a remote castle in Styria, is befriended by a beautiful, languid guest who seems to grow stronger as Laura grows weaker. Published twenty-five years before Dracula, it shaped the vampire story and remains striking for the open intimacy between the two women. His other books, such as Uncle Silas, still have too few ratings.
