Editor’s note Florentine diplomat and political thinker. He wrote The Prince in 1513, after the Medici returned to power and he was imprisoned, tortured and sent into exile on his farm, hoping to win back favour; it was published only after his death. Its cool advice that a ruler must be ready to lie, frighten and kill to keep the state secure gave us the word Machiavellian, yet it is also a sharp study of how power really works. Short and still argued over. His other works have too few ratings here.
