Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou — one title in the rankings. One series has a reading order worth keeping to.
Editor’s note American poet, memoirist and civil rights activist whose I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), one of the best rated books here, is the first of her seven autobiographies. It follows her childhood in segregated Stamps, Arkansas, raised by her grandmother, and in St. Louis and California, through racism, a rape at eight that left her silent for years, the books and teachers that brought her voice back, and motherhood at sixteen. Lyrical, frank and full of dignity and humour. She later read a poem at Bill Clinton’s 1993 inauguration.
