Jonathan Swift

Jonathan Swift — one title in the rankings.

Editor’s note Anglo-Irish satirist and clergyman, Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, whose Gulliver’s Travels (1726) is far sharper than the children’s versions suggest. Lemuel Gulliver’s voyages to tiny Lilliput, giant Brobdingnag, the flying island of Laputa and the land of the rational horses, the Houyhnhnms, mock politics, science and finally human nature itself, and Gulliver ends up preferring horses to people. Brilliant but dated in places, which shows in its modest score. Swift also wrote A Modest Proposal.
