J. M. Barrie
J. M. Barrie — one title in the rankings.
Editor’s note Scottish playwright and novelist who created Peter Pan, the boy who would not grow up, first on stage in 1904 and then in the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy, the book ranked here. It is stranger, funnier and sadder than its film versions: Neverland is dangerous, Peter is forgetful and heartless as only a child can be, and growing up is both a loss and inevitable. Barrie invented the story for the Llewelyn Davies boys and gave its rights to Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children.
