Eric Carle

Eric Carle — one title in the rankings.

Editor’s note American picture-book author and illustrator, raised partly in wartime Germany, whose The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969) has sold tens of millions of copies in dozens of languages. A tiny caterpillar eats through one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday and a Saturday feast of cake and sausage, leaving real holes in the pages, until a stomach-ache, a cocoon and a beautiful butterfly. Counting, days of the week and the life cycle in a few bright pages of his hand-painted tissue-paper collage. A first book for countless children, and one of the best rated here.
