Alice Walker

Alice Walker — one title in the rankings.

Editor’s note American novelist, poet and activist. The Color Purple, from 1982, made her the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction: told largely in letters to God, it follows Celie, a poor Black girl in rural Georgia, through abuse and a forced marriage to self-respect, love and reunion with her sister. Raw and finally joyful, it became Steven Spielberg’s film and a Broadway musical, and is one of the highest rated novels here. Her other books still have too few ratings.
