Editor’s note French writer born in 1913 in Algeria, then part of France, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 and died in a car crash in 1960, aged 46. His work circles what he called the absurd, the gap between our need for meaning and a silent world: The Stranger (1942) in a novel, The Myth of Sisyphus (1942) in an essay that ends by asking us to imagine Sisyphus happy, The Plague (1947) as a whole city under quarantine. He rejected the label existentialist. Start with The Stranger; it is short.
