Polish authors in the reader ranking include Andrzej Sapkowski and Stanisław Lem. The Witcher series began with a short story Sapkowski wrote for a competition run by the magazine Fantastyka, which printed it in December 1986. Lem’s “Solaris” appeared in 1961. Books set in what is now Poland include testimonies of the Holocaust: Art Spiegelman’s “Maus”, in 1992 the first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize, and Primo Levi’s “If This Is a Man”, his account of Auschwitz. The Nobel Prize in Literature went, among others, to Wisława Szymborska (1996) and Olga Tokarczuk (2018).
