『The Blade Itself』は、筋よりも人物で読ませる大人向けのファンタジーです。運の尽きかけた蛮人、うぬぼれの強い身勝手な士官、拷問を仕事にする審問官が丹念に描かれ、いつしか三人とも身近に感じられます。前半は進みが遅いと感じる人もおり、全体は三部作の土台づくりの印象です。血なまぐさく暗い作風なので、選ばれし者の英雄譚に飽きた読者に向いています。

知っておきたいこと 2006年の『ブレイド・イットセルフ』はジョー・アバークロンビーの最初の長編で、〈ファースト・ロー〉三部作の第1作である。三部作は2007年の『Before They Are Hanged』と2008年の『Last Argument of Kings』で完結した。この巻はシリーズを有名にした人物たちを紹介する。人殺しをやめようとする北方人ローゲン・ナインフィンガーズ、自身も拷問で壊された異端審問所の拷問官サンド・ダン・グロクタ（現代ファンタジーで最も可笑しい語り手だ）、剣術大会に向けて鍛錬する虚栄心の強い若い士官ジェザル・ダン・ルーサー、そして自分を魔道士の筆頭と名乗り、彼らを旅に集めるバヤズ。この巻ではほとんど何も解決しない。長い第一幕であり、三部作の報いはここにかかっている。グリムダークという言葉が広まる前のグリムダークである。
