Elements of the plot are loosely based on the shoggoth, a fictional species that appears in the novella At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft.

“I love how each of these are based off an existing Gothic horror story! I knew this one was Lovecraft pretty quickly, though with the West Virginia cave setting my original thought had been Whisperer in Darkness. Now that I'm all caught up, I can't wait to see what Kingfisher does next with this series. 😁”
