這本書的美與殘酷同樣多，不會讓讀者輕鬆讀完。故事以動盪年代的阿富汗為背景，寫友誼、背叛與漫長的贖罪之路，核心是父親對兒子的影響與支配。它不只悲傷，張力也很強，最好挑個心情承受得住的時候再讀。適合想讀一部真正揪心的小說的讀者。
值得一提 在加州行醫的卡勒德．胡賽尼，是在上班前的清晨寫下這部處女作，2003 年出版。故事跟隨阿米爾，從 1970 年代的喀布爾，經過蘇聯入侵與塔利班統治，一直到他在美國的生活。讀者應事先知道，一場對孩童的性暴力是情節的核心。馬克．佛斯特於 2007 年將它拍成電影。
