이 책에 대하여
《싯다르타》(독일어: Siddhartha)는 동양 사상에 깊은 관심을 갖고 있던 헤르만 헤세가 1922년 발표한 종교소설이다. 인도의 카스트 제도에서 제1계급에 속하는 성직자 계급의 아들 싯다르타가 깨달음을 얻기 위하여 출가, 이후 먼저 해탈에 경지에 오른 불교 창시자 석가모니를 만나 그의 깨달음에 균열이 있음을 인지한다. 이후 수행이 아닌 다양한 인생 경험을 거쳐 깨달음을 얻는다는 내용이다. 서양인의 눈에 생소할 수 있는 불교가 어떻게 해석되는지를 보여 주었다.
